ancient masks

image titled “freaky deer” on flickr

studying ancient rituals
felt so boring
even if it was a prerequisite
for evocation classes

until they day we saw the masks
guarded behind glass
at the museum
which the public thought
were ancient artifacts
but we knew were
the remains of a human
and an animal
melded together as punishment

a human soul trapped
in the mind of the animal
and the essence drawn out
to create art

gotta hand it to those
ancient magic wielders
they were bastards,
but imaginative

i’d think twice about
committing a magical crime
if i thought i’d spent eternity
starting out of a mask
into the faces of snot nosed kids
and ignorant muggles
